Economic Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Big Bay Area and Innovation Platform of University of Macau

“Economic Development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Big Bay Area and Innovation Platform of University of Macau”

After the meetings of National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference earlier this year, “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Big Bay Area (GHMBBA)” not only becomes a hot word now, but also makes the related leaders of the 9 cities in Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong and Macao to quickly do some actions for participating in the planning of the Big Bay Area. When the BATH+F in GHMBBA gradually catch up the development of the FLAG+A in San Francisco Bay Area, the economic development of GHMBBA driven by science and technology innovations will become unstoppable. “How does Macao respond to appropriately diversify the local industries to cope with the opportunity” remains a concern for a lot of people.

In fact, as early as last year, Macao had stepped ahead in the preparation. In September 2016, the National Development and Reform Commission released “The Guiding Opinions on Implementing the Regional Development Strategy and Promoting Regional Coordinated Development”, which emphasizes the need of “enhancing the Pan-Pearl River Delta regional cooperation and support in conjunction with the Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macao in the development planning of GHMBBA”. The Macao SAR Government started to discuss about the development planning of Big Bay Area and carried out research with the governments in Guangdong province and Shenzhen. Under the new historical opportunity, given the limited land resources and size of economy compared with Hong Kong, how does Macao cope with the development of the Big Bay Area? What is the role that the University of Macau should play?

In this Talk, Prof. Yen will share “how to make use of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Big Bay Area concept to integrate the resources from different regions, which will create a broader incubation platform of innovation and entrepreneurship for young people in Macau.
